Do you love emeralds? Are you looking for safe ways to wear them every day? Are your colleagues starting to notice that you’re wearing the same pair of emerald earrings every day?

If so, you’re in luck!

In this blog post, we will discuss how to wear emeralds every day without running the risk of chipping, cracking or wearing them out.

Durability of Emeralds

  • 14K Yellow Gold Emerald and Diamond Bypass Ring – FR-YG-00013

Durability means that a gemstone is or is not prone to chipping, scratching or breaking.

Alas, the emerald is rather delicate compared to diamonds and sapphires and so consideration must be given to protecting them first and foremost.

Hardness

Emeralds are 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

This would be great if we were talking about a Richter scale, but this is not the case.

The Mohs scale rates diamond as the hardest gemstone at 10, and it goes downwards from there.

Sapphires measure 9, so when looking at emeralds you can see that they are not likely to stand up to much abuse.

The reason why knowing the hardness of your gemstones is important is because you will then be able to decide how you will wear them in order to protect them while getting your use of them too.

The hardness is an indication of durability.

Part of the durability issue with emeralds is the fact that their growth patterns result in many fissures and natural crevices (aka inclusions) that are found deep within the stone and can reach close to the surface.

This makes them prone to cracking along those fissures with the slightest bashing.

Chemicals and Heat

The other thing about emeralds is that they cannot take strong chemicals or heat.

While emeralds do undergo oiling after they are mined and cut to improve their color or clarity appearance, they are never heated to deepen color, nor are they chemically treated like many other stones are.

In fact, if they are heated, they will change color.

And if they are exposed to harsh chemicals, the emerald could develop cracks or fissures.

Can Emeralds Be Worn Every Day?

You can wear your emeralds everyday, but it depends on what types of jewelry they are in. First, let’s look at the reasons why you would not want to wear them daily, then we will look at how you can get around that in order to do so.

3 Things That Could Happen If You Wear Emeralds Every Day

Emeralds are said to be the stone of successful people.

Wearing them every day is said to bring success, abundance and happiness your way. But what could really happen if you wear emeralds every day? Here are three possible things that might happen:

You’ll Break Them

You will risk the possibility of knocking them while doing chores, working out or exposing them to harsh household chemicals.

If you knock an emerald even slightly, you can easily chip it on the edge of the girdle or even crack it in half because of the internal inclusion formations.

You’ll Lose Them

You will risk the loss of your emerald if you wear down the prongs that hold it in place.

As prongs wear down, they will often snag and the tips can easily break off.

If your emerald is set in only four prongs, it will only take losing one of them for the stone to fall out, and this may go unnoticed for awhile.

You’ll Wear Them Out

You risk the possibility of wearing them down over time.

If you want to keep the emerald surface scratch free and the facets sharp and crisp, then even the wear and tear of even rubbing on bed sheets will eventually wear down the surface of a gemstone that is already soft on the Mohs scale.

How To Wear Emeralds Every Day Without Wearing Them Out

With how beautiful and valuable emeralds are, of course you’ll want to wear them every day! Now that you are sufficiently scared about wearing them, let’s look at how you can do so without putting them at risk. Here are a few ways:

Wear Your Emeralds on Your Passive Hand

If you have an emerald ring, do not wear it on the “dominant” hand, that is, the hand which is the most active.

You would be surprised at the amount of activity that you will spare your emerald when you choose to wear it on a hand that is weaker or used much less than the other.

We often do not realize it, but our dominant hand does 60% more “work” than the other hand does!

Take Your Emeralds Off Often

Remove your emerald ring when you know that you are going to do something that can cause you to hit it or get it caught on something.

If you intend to do the gardening, wash dishes, scrub, lift or pull, or even sleep, then take it off and set it where it cannot fall into a sink drain.

Even sleeping will cause the bedclothes and sheets to constantly rub against the emerald surface, and although it will take time, it will eventually wear down the crispness of the facets.

Wear Emeralds in Other Types of Jewelry

If you have other pieces of emerald jewelry besides rings, then you are in luck, because rings are the most prone to damage than any other jewelry.

Next in line for damage are bracelets.

You can wear your emerald earrings daily, and also your emerald pendants because neither of them are going to suffer the wear and tear or possible damage that something on your hand or wrist will.

Consider wearing the earrings and pendant, but pair the emeralds with other stones that compliment it for rings and bracelets.

Also consider that Tsavorite garnets are often confused as being emeralds.

Consider buying some of them too!

Have Your Emerald “Reset”

Consider having your emerald reset.

Yes, if you have a really nice emerald and wish to preserve it for the next generation, then consider having it remounted into a pendant instead of leaving it in a ring or bracelet mounting.

You can also have it remounted into a mounting that will result in it setting lower than the surface to protect it, or a full bezel set mounting.

Ask your jeweler to see some styles of mountings that will better protect your gem!

Get Your Emeralds Checked Out

Have your emerald examined by your jewelry store on a more frequent basis than you would for your other gemstones.

You will be told if your gem is becoming loose or if the prongs are wearing thin, or are compromised enough to risk the loss of your stone.

You will also be told if there are developing signs of wear and perhaps you may want to switch the hand you wear it on by having it resized.

Store Your Emeralds Elsewhere

Do not store your emeralds next to other jewelry.

Jostling around metals against your emerald can result in scratching it, and the other gemstones can cause your emerald to become dull.

Emeralds are best stored in a padded box where they cannot shift around and knock into each other or other jewelry.

FAQ’s About Wearing Emeralds Every Day

Can you wear emeralds in the shower?

People do wear their jewelry when showering, but they are exposing the gems to soaps and shampoo that has chemicals in it.

While most chemicals would not really bother many other types of gems, an emerald can get a build up of them over time and also a coating of soaps that do not rinse off.

This will make your emerald look dull and lifeless the more you shower with it on. Also, chances are that if you are showering with your jewelry on, you are also doing other body care such as applying lotions or hair products.

These will also coat your stone and build up over time.

When should you not wear emerald?

Along with the suggestions already given, you may want to forego wearing your emerald when you are swimming due to chlorine, when you are using bleach types of products, and when you are spending any amount of time in a rough neighborhood.

Do emeralds damage easily?

Emeralds do damage easily compared to some other gemstones.

This is no reason not to wear them anymore than wearing other soft gems like opal or pearls. Just take the precautions suggested and you can enjoy your emeralds.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, there are many ways that you can wear emeralds every day without damaging them.

Just remember to take them off before doing any cleaning, cooking, or other activities where they may come in contact with chemicals or harsh cleaners.

Also, make sure to have them checked out by your jeweler on a regular basis, that way you can catch any potential problems before they become too big to fix.

Finally, don’t forget to store them in a safe place where they won’t get damaged. By following these simple tips, you can enjoy your emeralds for many years to come!
